But God can also be present to us in our family or friends, the work that we do, the nature that we enjoy, or the sports or
other activities
in which we
participate. All
have the ability
to show us
another aspect
or side of God
and present an
opportunity for
God to relate to us.
In his famous method of prayer, the Examen, St. Ignatius of Loyola provides us with a tool to reflect on our day and recall the ways that God has been present to us each day. How does it work? Here are the steps of the Examen that
St. Ignatius proposes:
1. Become aware of God’s presence; Look back on your day and all that happened. Our lives are so busy and can become a blur. But recall as much as you can about your day.
2. Review the day with gratitude: When were the times you felt the presence of God in the people you met or the activities in which you were engaged?
3. Pay attention to your emotions: When were the times that you were most filled with joy? or anxiety? or anger? or confidence? Bring to mind these emotions that God has gifted you with.
The words of
St. Ignatius of Loyola
“ Be slow to speak, and only after
having first listened quietly, so that you may understand the meaning, leanings, and wishes of those who do speak. Thus you will better know when to speak and when to be silent.”
