AUTUMN
September
Although many school years begin in August, the month of September still signals the end of one season and the beginning of another. Summer is ending, yet there are still a few days warm enough to spend outdoors. Be sure to set aside time on the weekends to enjoy them with family and friends!
The flower designated for this month is the aster, from the Greek word for star. It symbolizes love, faith, and wisdom. Take a family walk through your neighborhood and see how many asters you can find! They come in the colors of pink, red, white, lilac, and mauve.
September is a transitional time, especially for children, who are getting used to new routines, new teachers, and perhaps new friends. Be alert to give encourage- ment and reassurance as needed. Children do want to grow up, but that does not mean that it is always easy!
The blessings and prayers below are offered as helps during this transition time. You may want to tuck a favorite one into your child’s daily planner for use during a quiet moment at school.
Prayers for a New School Year
A Parent’s Blessing for the First Day of School
A reading from the Book of Proverbs: “Happy the one who finds wisdom,
the one who gains understanding! Her profit is better than profit in silver,
and better than gold is her revenue. . . . Her ways are pleasant ways,
and all her paths are peace.”
(Proverbs 3:13–14, 17)
God of Wisdom,
As we begin a new school year, we ask you to be with our child (children). Help her (him) to listen, to participate, to help others, and to make good friends in school. Help her (him) to find and use the gifts and talents you have given, and to share your love with others. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ.
All: Amen.
Put your hand on your child’s head and, with your thumb, trace the Sign of the Cross on your child’s forehead.
And now I bless you, [name], in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May all your paths be peace!
