Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8)
Introduction
Because the Church has designated December 8 as the feast of Mary’s Immaculate Conception, the date of September 8 is chosen as her birthday celebration. Celebrate Mary’s birthday in honor of her special place in the life of Jesus, and in the life of all humanity: “Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ” (Matthew 1:16).
As a family, complete all of the following faith-sharing steps, or do one or more as time permits.
Today’s Reading
Go to www.usccb.org/bible/readings for the text or an audio recording of the Scripture readings for the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Note that there are two choices for each of the readings (the first reading and the Gospel).
Faith-Sharing Activity
Nothing says “birthday” like cupcakes and candles! Invite the family to make cup- cakes together, with a boxed mix or your favorite recipe. Using food coloring, dye white frosting blue (Mary’s color) and frost the cupcakes. Put a birthday candle in each one, so each family member can blow out a candle. Don’t forget to sing “Happy Birthday” first!
