Catechist background
all of our prayers can be sorted into several, often closely related, categories: contrition, gratitude, intercession, blessing, and praise. let’s look at the prayers of intercession, which are also at times re- ferred to as prayers of petition. in these prayers, we focus on asking God for things we need or for things others need. ese prayers are simple and direct. Many people pray these prayers throughout their day. “God, please heal my spouse.” or “God, please help me on this test.” during the Mass, the general intercessions, which are examples of pe- tition, occur after the creed. if you closely exam- ine the our Father, you will see that it consists of seven petitions. by teaching his disciples the our Father, Jesus showed us how important our peti- tions are to God.
