How Does Jesus Ask Us to Treat People?
Who am I supposed to love?
Love God with your Who whole heart and your is my neighbor? neighbor as yourself.
A man was walking along a road. Robbers beat him up, took his money, and left him for dead.
A man came hurrying along the road. He saw the injured man but did not have time to help and went on.
A third man came down the road. He saw the injured man, stopped, and bandaged his wounds.
The next day he gave the innkeeper money. “Take care of this man. If it costs more, I will repay
you when I come back.”
Find the sticker of Jesus’ face. Put it here.
Another man came by. He saw the injured man but he didn’t know what to do and went on.
He took the injured man to an inn and cared for him.
Who shows love for the man who was robbed?
Who treats him as a neighbor?
Based on Luke 10:29-37
2. Describe the characters who will appear in Jesus’ story of the good Samaritan—traveler, robbers, priest, Temple worker, stranger from Samaria, innkeeper. Explain that Samaria was a country very close to the country where Jesus lived. Use the map at this point if one is available. Explain also that people in Jesus’ country looked down on Samaritans because they did not keep the Law of God the same way the Jews did. Compare this situation to a rivalry in your own local area.
3. Have the children open Lesson 1 and find the characters in the cartoon that you have described. Recall the question, “Who am I supposed to love?” which Jesus tells this story to answer. Read the good Samaritan cartoon aloud to the children while they follow the cartoon frame by frame. Or, have the children use the Bible you have displayed in the room, and read the story from Luke 10:29-37.
-15-
Discuss:
a. Whose actions in the story were
loving?
b. Whose actions were unloving?
4. Have the children find the Jesus sticker that fits in the cartoon frame. After they have put their sticker in place, have the children read aloud and discuss the questions Jesus is asking at the end of the story.
a. Who shows love for the man who was robbed? The Samaritan, someone who supposedly doesn’t keep the law as well as Jews do. Actions are what counts.
b. Who treats the man as a neighbor? The Samaritan. Someone whom the people in Jesus’ country didn’t like to think of as a neighbor.
5. To conclude, turn back to the question the child asks Jesus in the first frame of the cartoon story, “Who am I supposed to love?” Help the children recognize that Jesus calls us to love all people through concrete actions. Stress that this means people in their families and among their classmates. Children must not help strangers because they could be hurt.
